The first candle on the Advent wreath is lit. We begin to prepare for the coming of the Son of God into our world, our lives and our relationships. Just as we clean the dirty corners of our homes during the Christmas clean, repairing or throwing away broken items, the Advent season can also be a time to address the neglected areas of our lives. The coming Saviour may also mend some of the things that are broken if we present them to him. We should also let go of some things.

At its last meeting in Bratislava, the CPCE Council issued a statement that follows in the tradition of the Council of Nicaea in 325, emphasising its significance for today.

I wish you a blessed Advent season!

Yours, Mario Fischer

General Secretary of the CPCE

News from the Council
The CPCE marks the 1700th anniversary of the Coucil of Nicaea

The CPCE Council highlights the lasting significance of Nicaea’s Trinitarian confession, reflects self-critically on the relationship between church and political power, and calls for renewed efforts toward a common Easter date. The text is available in English, German, French, Italian, Estonian, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Romanian.

The Second CPCE Council Meeting of the current term took place in Bratislava from 20 to 22 November

Around 30 representatives from 13 countries came together, accompanied by joint worship services in various languages. The Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Slovakia and the Reformed Christian Church in Slovakia, as host churches, helped to prepare the Council meeting, for which we are very grateful!

The meeting was dominated by serious topics: the effects of the war in Ukraine, the CPCE's financial challenges and questions about the future of the church (‘theology of change’, the pastoral profession, the role of women in ministry). The Council also discussed progress in ecumenical dialogues and issues of migration and interculturality in European churches.

Reports were given on extensive aid projects by the Gustav Adolf Werk, especially for so-called ‘Euro orphans’. In addition, a statement was prepared on the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. The next General Assembly will take place in 2031. It was the last Council meeting for General Secretary Mario Fischer; his successor will be Susanne Schenk.

Advisory Board on Ethics develops a guide

The Advisory Board on Ethics met in Vienna. On behalf of the Council, it will develop a guide with the working title ‘Being Church Together in Times of Uncertainty.’ It will address current situations of uncertainty, such as the climate crisis, the threat of war and defence readiness, as well as the question of which images and media we can trust. It will ask what consequences this has for the psyche and distributional justice in society and what role the churches can play in this context. The guidance document is expected to be published in the first half of 2027.

Nicaea as an Impulse for Ecumenism

Ecumenical dialogue and action gained momentum in 2025 through the commemoration of the Council of Nicaea. This also affects the European collaboration between Protestant and Orthodox Churches. A key element of this development was the conference "From Local to Universal Synodality" held in Sibiu, Romania (November 14–15), organized by ZETO and the Faculty of Orthodox Theology "Andrei Saguna". CPCE General Secretary Mario Fischer provided "A Protestant Perspective on Walking Together across Church Boundaries – From  Synodality to Conciliarity".

A report on this was featured by Romanian television (Romanian with English subtitles).

CPCE Consultation on "Ministry, Ordination, Episkopé"

In collaboration with the Church of Norway, CPCE is preparing for the theologically significant consultation on "Ministry, Ordination, Episkopé" in Oslo, April 23–25, 2026. 35 Reformed, Lutheran, Waldensian, and Methodist theologians from across Europe have been nominated for this conversation. In which direction the discussions will move shows the working title of the consultation: “Rethinking Ministry in the CPCE: Responding to Diversification through Ministry, Ordination, Episkopé” (LT 13).

We apologize for the incorrect date provided in our October issue for the consultation.

Our New Website: A Fresh Look for the CPCE

We are delighted to announce that our newly designed website will be available shortly. The aim of the redesign was to create a more appealing and clearly structured online experience that immediately conveys who we are and what motivates us.

With more comprehensible texts and lots of photos, we want to communicate even better in future the added value we offer both to our member churches and to interested visitors. An important element is the bookshop and download area, whose filter functions are designed to make it easier to search for CPCE documents.

The design also incorporates elements of church art, specifically stained glass windows. A few final details are still being completed, but we are now in the finalisation phase.

Church Communion Helps to Understand Faith

Within the church communion, churches that are currently shrinking in Europe can advise and help each other. In this video, Georg Plasger talks about how commitment to democracy can also be derived from the contents of faith and what role the triad of trust, recognition and confession plays in the horizon of faith, among many other points. Professor Plasger, who teaches systematic theology at the University of Siegen, has been a member of the CPCE Presidium since 2024, and is dedicated to safeguarding the rich tapestry of Protestant traditions across Europe. He himself contributes in a special way to the Reformed tradition.
